The Great Smoking Debate & Freepers
March 9, 2003 | me

Posted on 03/08/2003 12:10:25 PM PST by Im4Starr

On another thread there are varying opinions about smoke, smokers and smoking. Some Freepers think the carcinogens are harmful and should be banned and others did some reading and found the opposite to be true. What say you?

I quit smoking July 22 2002 after 15 long years.

I hate smoking

But one thing I hate more than smoking is the fascist fanatics who seek to ban people from smoking if they damn well please.

Second hand smoke is an urban legend pushed on the populace by Swedish style technocratic socialists to control people's behavior.
Both my parents smoke and other than some childhood asthma, my lungs developed just fine.

No, it was hereditary, all the men on my mother's side of the family have it until they are teenagers.

The 1193 EPA study that says second hand smoke kills was thrown out by a federal court in 1998. Furthermore the court lambasted the EPA for junk science.

THERE IS NO PROOF SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS ANYTHING

I quit in March 1986. Tobacco is a curse and it wouldn't bother me if it were banned.

Both my parents smoke

Both my parents smoked and suffered smoking related illnesses, but my mom died more from alcohol than smoke. My dad had emphysema and quit before it killed him, but he still has pnumonia related problems. Both lived to old age.

My wife and I occasionally partake, and we are told we would be 30 IQ points higher if our parents did not smoke. (OK, I'm being sarcastic). But seriously, the only reason for the whole smoking thing is lawyers were able to win large settlements by baffling juries. Smoking should be legal, and restricted only by private property owners including business employers as they see fit. No government regulation is needed here.

After a meal, I enjoy the thick black smoke of chopped up truck tire. You put it in an ashtry (duh!) and light it. The smoke goes to the ceiling and then spreads throughout the entire restaurant. It smells wonderful. I know all the other customers also love the aroma and getting it in their hair and on their clothes and, of course, in their lungs. If we allow the smoke nazis to stop people from burning tobacco in public places, where will it stop? Then they would try to stop us from burning aromatic chopped michelin.

My father smoked until the early 80's. I'm sure he agrees with you wholeheartedly.

From the other thread...(I was hoping to move the 'debate' portion here):

I don't remember bitching about people smoking. I could give a damn if someone wants to smoke. I do give a damn when they want to spew their filthy smoke in my direction in a restaurant. Music and beer are legal too. That doesn't mean you'd want people playing loud music and getting drunk next door to you every night, does it? Grow up. As far as going to other restaurants, I said that I don't like the government making a ban on all smoking.

1 out of 4 people are smokers...so what. First of all, that's a lot of people. More importantly, I don't care if only two people smoke, I still don't need them sitting ten ft away from me blowing smoke in my face. It is my business. Why don't you mind your own business, you classless fool.

I will read it later. Though I must say that your propaganda is no more trustworthy than the other propaganda. Smoking is bad for people. Smoking kills people. People inhale cigarette smoke. This includes innocent bystanders who want no part of your habbit.

LOL! I'm really mad about those pesky health regulations too. If a restauranteer wants to allow rat feces and roaches in their kitchen, who is the nanny state to say anything?

FYI, the state of Florida recently passed the anti-smoking ban on our constitution. I believe it passed with well over 60% of voters. I voted against it. I still have to admit I'm not going to miss the filthy smoke from restaurants or bars. BTW, I've been known to smoke occasionally when I've had a few alcoholic beverages.
